EPISODE 6 | PUT IN THE WORK PODCAST | IF I HAD TO START FROM SCRATCH

FULL EPISODE

💪 WHAT I'D DO IF I HAD TO RESTART: 3 Simple Steps to Get Back on Track

Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or ready for a fresh start with your health and fitness?
In this episode of the Put In The Work podcast, I dive into what I would do if I were starting from scratch—no confidence, no gym experience, and 20–40 pounds overweight. Whether you're a beginner or just in need of a reset, this guide is for you.

Here are the 3 simple but powerful steps to get started and stay on track.

1. Focus on Inputs, Not Outcomes

When you're beginning (or beginning again), it's tempting to obsess over the scale or whether your clothes fit better. But progress isn't always linear—and many factors like hormones, sleep, and stress are out of your control.

👉 Instead, track the actions you can control:

  • How many times did you hit the gym this week?
  • Did you get to bed on time?
  • Did you prep your meals ahead of time?

Inputs lead to results. When you focus on the process, the outcome takes care of itself.

2. Keep It Stupid Simple (KISS)

There’s so much information online that it’s easy to feel paralyzed. Should you do keto? Intermittent fasting? CrossFit? Pilates?

Here’s the truth: You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need to start small.

Start with micro-habits:

  • Go to the gym and just sit in the parking lot for 5 minutes.
  • Pick one meal you already make, and meal prep just that—no fancy containers, no Pinterest recipes.
  • Cut fast food down from five times a week to once.

These tiny steps create momentum. Over time, they stack into long-term habits that stick.

3. Get Accountability

This is your secret weapon.

Whether it’s a coach, a workout buddy, or even a friend you see once a week—having someone to check in with changes everything. You’re more likely to show up when someone else is counting on you.

✅ Accountability could be:

  • Signing up for a challenge or race
  • Asking your spouse or a friend to check in
  • Hiring a coach who truly keeps you on track

Don’t go it alone. Humans are wired for community, especially when it comes to hard things like behavior change.

Final Thoughts: Master These Before You Do Anything Else

If I were starting from zero, I wouldn’t add anything else until these three were locked in:

  1. Focus on daily inputs
  2. Keep it embarrassingly simple
  3. Get accountable

When you're bored of the basics—that’s when you know it’s working.
